Dr. Mikki Garcia |
|
Dr. Mikki Garcia has been an educator for
over 30 years. Her first 5 years of teaching were spent teaching
middle and high school English and Spanish. In 1984, she decided
to go back to school to pursue advanced studies in special
education, something she had always wanted to do. During her 5
years at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Garcia gained invaluable
experiences working with individuals with disabilities of all
ages. The culmination of her experiences occurred in 1989 when
she received her doctoral degree in special education.
In 1990, she moved to Germany with her
husband and children where they lived for four years. While in
Europe, she had the opportunity to work with students with
disabilities for the Department of Defense Dependent Schools. In
1994, they moved back to Savannah where Dr. Garcia was employed by
the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools as a resource
specialist for the special education department. In 1995, Dr.
Garcia accepted a position as a faculty member at Armstrong
Atlantic State University. She worked in the special education
department as a teacher trainer. In 2001, after 6 years at
Armstrong Atlantic, Dr. Garcia decided it was time to go back to
public school service. She applied for and was offered her
current position as the senior director for the Department for
Exceptional Children. A public school advocate, Dr. Garcia came
back to the environment that she most loved.
Currently, Dr. Garcia serves on the State
Advisory Panel; is the President of the Georgia Federation,
Council for Exceptional Children; and has accepted the position as
the advisor to the Parent Mentor Program. Dr. Garcia’s
experiences in these arenas as well as her position as a special
education director have prepared her well to be the
President-Elect of GCASE. She enjoys the challenges of being a
special educator and the privilege it gives her of doing what is
right for children with special needs. |

Philip Mellor |
| Philip Mellor has been
working in the field of education for 23 years. Out of college, he
began working with the GNETS program and has served students with
disabilities for the majority of his career through various roles
including school psychology, director of GNETS and director of
Special Education for several systems. Mr. Mellor is currently
the Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services and the
Director of Special Education for Bibb County Schools. In the last
two school systems he has been responsible for maximizing FTEs for
students with disabilities which resulted in greatly increasing
the funds for staff and services for our students with
disabilities. He has also worked diligently to implement a range
of inclusive settings with resulting increase of LRE from 39% to
67% for the 3,000 students with disabilities in Bibb County.
Mr. Mellor is presently serving in the role of the Treasurer
for G-CASE and is willing to continue serving in that capacity. He
feels strongly that G-CASE is poised for continued growth and
influence as a professional organization and is honored to serve
as a supporter of students with disabilities and to advocate for
their best practices.
